Why have we chosen our mission?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest problems facing modern Poland is the people\u2019s low level of trust in the country\u2019s justice system<\/strong>. While in countries such as the Czech Republic, France, Germany or Sweden, trust in the judiciary is always slightly higher than trust in other people, trust in the courts in Poland is even lower than the already alarmingly low level of trust in our fellow citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lack of trust in the courts is a barrier to Poland\u2019s economic development<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Lack of trust means many people hesitate to use the justice system when they need it. On the one hand, too many Poles feel powerless when involved in a dispute with the state, but on the other hand, oftentimes they ignore court summons\u2019, and do not follow court orders or respect their judgments. From an economic point of view, untrustworthy courts mean higher transaction costs, trade insecurity and weak protection of property rights. This leads to a lower inflow of investments and hampers entrepreneurial ambitions and activities. It is not without reason that the evaluation of a country\u2019s judicial system is one of the indicators used by, for example, the \u201cDoing Business\u201d Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citizens need a trustworthy third branch of government<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Volunteers participating in our Civic Court Monitoring program can see for themselves what the Polish justice system is really like, and they can confront popular stereotypes with reality. During their participation in the program, they encounter many respectful and competent judges, both in terms of professionalism and personality. As a Foundation, we see how contact with judges and, observing how they make decisions, strengthens the confidence of our volunteers in the judiciary. These volunteers in turn can boost the country\u2019s overall faith in the judicial system when they share their experiences at the courthouse with friends and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the opposite can happen when an observer meets a judge who appears partial and displays suspicion toward a party. This sort of behavior contradicts the profound mission of their profession. These experiences can also shape the image of the judicial branch of government in the eyes of court observers. However, only revealing such inappropriate behavior can reduce its occurrence in Polish courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Personal experience – an antidote to populism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The image of courts in the eyes of most Poles is not built through personal experience. Instead, it is shaped by the statements of other people, and the greater the emotions that these statements and opinions arouse, the more people they reach. It is not difficult to guess what emotions are easier to arouse in this case – fear, anger, distrust This is especially true, given that it is a person\u2019s freedom and livelihood that are usually at stake when they enter a courthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Because Poles deserve a trustworthy judicial branch of government<\/strong>, we believe that being open to their presence in courtrooms across the country and encouraging their interest in the Polish justice system is a great opportunity to improve the Polish judiciary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
