The project titled „Pilot implementation of the community court model in Poland” (IS-1/039/NCBR/2014) will run for 3 years, between 2013-2016. Our main aim is to study the possibility of introduction of the community court model into the Polish legal and social context. Such innovation is needed, since despite decreasing levels of crime, majority of Polish citizens continue to distrust the justice system. Lack of public confidence, in turn, leads to further alienation and inefficiency of the system. Our aim is also to enhance the use of restorative solutions, that could contribute both to greater perceptions of the system’s legitimacy, as well as to fostering problem-solving approaches within the Polish system of justice. The project includes legal analysis of the extent in which it is possible to translate and implement some of the existing practices (as observed in the USA, Norway, the UK and elsewhere) into the Polish legal system. In the second phase of the project (2015-2016) we will set up community justice centers in two Polish cities – Białystok and Toruń, to test these ideas in practice. Read more (in Polish).

Since November 2013, Court Watch Poland Foundation has been partnering with three public universities: University of Białystok (Law Department), Nicolas Copernicus University in Toruń (Department of Sociology), and University of Gdańsk (Department of Sociology) in a joint project funded by the Polish National Council for Research and Development.
